Babylon’s Fall is getting a visual upgrade

Babylon’s Fall launched earlier this year to middling reviews at best, with the game – intended as a live service title – seeing next to no players. Despite this, the team at PlatinumGames are determined to steer the ship around, and have now detailed the latest set of improvements coming to the game.

Making the announcement on Square Enix’s website, the publisher sat down with Babylon Fall’s directors (Kenji Saito and Takahisa Sugiyama) to discuss the past, present and future of the game.

One of the repeated complaints thrown towards Babylon’s Fall was the fact that the oil paint-like art style looked messy in motion, affecting every element of interaction with the game. Prior to launch, the art style was toned down, but even that seemingly was not enough.

Now, the game has once again adopted a new art style, with Sugiyama explaining the reason for this alteration, saying “The team had not managed to do enough testing on the graphics, especially the visibility aspect and how that could create stress for players repeatedly playing an action game over a long period. Based on player feedback, we wanted to deliver as many improvements as possible at an early stage and it ultimately worked out that we could get those fixes out at this time.”

Saito echoed these sentiments, saying “As Mr. Sugiyama said above, there was previously an issue with the visibility of the graphics causing stress for players as they repeatedly played through the hack and slash style game cycle. That problem should have been reduced now.”

Babylon’s Fall’s issues run much deeper than simply its art style. Still, the fact that the developers were willing to change so much of the game shows not only that they care, but that they are listening to the fans. While this may not be the turning point for Babylon’s Fall, it’s a solid first step. The full interview / blog post, including the new character creation menu, can be found HERE.
