Activision tries to justify COD MW3’s 200GB+ file size

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 has struggled somewhat to gain the favour of fans. This is partially due to the fact that this year’s COD entry was initially intended to be DLC for 2022’s MW2 – before ultimately being ‘expanded’ into a full-priced premium experience. In the wake of MW3’s lacklustre campaign, Activision is now having to explain why MW3 can take up over 200GB of space.

Responding to fans’ criticism of MW3’s surprising increase in file size compared to recent entries (which focused on bringing down total game sizes), Activision took to its official Call of Duty Twitter account to say:

“#MW3 is almost here. In preparation, we would like to provide an update on file sizes which are larger than last year. This is due to the increased amount of content available Day 1, including open world Zombies, support for item carry forward from #MW2, as well as map files for current Call of Duty: Warzone. (Note: as part of our ongoing optimization efforts, your final installation size will be actually smaller than the combined previous Call of Duty experiences).”

They continued, “You can manage your Call of Duty files in the ‘manage files’ section of the COD HQ launcher menu. This includes the ability to uninstall specific content you are not actively playing. We’ll be sharing more information regarding launch in the coming days.”

For some, the idea that MW3 features more content on Day-1 than previous titles is somewhat disingenuous – especially as the game was originally intended to simply be DLC for last year’s title. That said, it is good to see that at the very least certain elements of the game can be uninstalled separately (such as the game’s campaign). Hopefully they do indeed continue to optimise MW3’s file size.
