World of Warcraft Classic: Cataclysm expansion landing next month

Blizzard has been slowly expanding World of Warcraft: Classic with additional expansions, offering players a chance to go back in time to each major moment in the game as it was back then, or even with improvements if you participate in seasons. At this point, WoW Classic is caught up to Wrath of the Litch King and soon, Classic players will be able to take a trip back in time to Cataclysm.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was a game-changing moment for the MMO. This expansion had Deathwing unleashing havoc all across Azeroth, changing the game forever. It was a huge turning point for the story and also made significant changes to the game world. If you missed it the first time around, now you can experience it first hand.

World of Warcraft Classic: Cataclysm was announced at BlizzCon last year, with plans for a 2024 launch. Now, Blizzard has announced a more specific release date – the 20th of May. The major changes that the expansion will bring include:

  • Seven new zones: Mount Hyjal, Vash’jir, Twilight Highlands, Uldum, Deepholm, Kezan, and Gilneas
  • Nine new dungeons: Blackrock Caverns, Throne of the Tides, Vortex Pinnacle, The Stonecore, The Lost City of Tol’vir, The Halls of Origination, Grim Batol, Deadmines, Shadowfang Keep
  • Dungeon journal introduced
  • Three new raid dungeons: Throne of the Four Winds, Blackwing Descent, and Bastion of Twilight
  • Flexible raid lock system: Allowing players to do both 10 and 25-player raids in the same week
  • Tol Barad PvP zone
  • Darkmoon Island: discover the mysteries Silas Darkmoon has in store for you
  • Flying in Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor

As has been the case with WoW Classic's other expansions, you can choose to stick around in your current expansion era by selecting that specific server.

Modern World of Warcraft will also be getting some major updates this year, including The War Within expansion, which will be the first in a trilogy of expansions offering up a massive new story arc for players.
