WB wants Hogwarts Legacy 2 to tie-in with Harry Potter HBO series

A few months ago, Warner Bros made it clear that it had plans to produce another Hogwarts Legacy game. Now, it seems they have a fast-tracked plan in place, with hopes to have the new game ready to tie in with the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

Hogwarts Legacy only just launched in 2023 and rumour has it that an expanded ‘definitive edition' is on the way with even more story content. According to David Haddad, President of WB Interactive Entertainment, the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is now a “very big priority” for the company.

Speaking with Variety, Haddad added that the new game will share storytelling elements with the upcoming Harry Potter series, which is slated to air on HBO starting in 2026.

This would be a very different direction for Hogwarts Legacy 2. While the original game carved out its own lane in the larger Harry Potter universe, it did not have any tie-ins with the events of the books or films. It sounds like the sequel will do the opposite of that and shift timelines to take place alongside mainline canon events.

Hogwarts Legacy has sold over 30 million copies worldwide so far. Given today's game development landscape, the chances of Hogwarts Legacy 2 being ready in time for 2026 seem painfully slim. However, it wouldn't be the first time that Warner Bros. executives have shown a complete lack of awareness when it comes to games industry realities. As far as we know, WB also wants to continue pushing for live service projects, despite the massive financial failure of Rocksteady's Suicide Squad.

KitGuru Says: It sounds like Hogwarts Legacy is about to go through some major changes for a sequel that ties into Warner Bros larger cross-media ambitions. I'm not sure anyone was asking for film or TV tie-in games to come back, but here we are. The game will no doubt be years away anyway, so plans could no doubt change.
