There is apparently an Elden Ring mobile game on the way

Last year with the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro, Apple made a few surprising gaming announcements. Now, several AAA studios are bringing their games to iOS devices, including the likes of Resident Evil Village and Death Stranding. Unfortunately, other acclaimed titles are going in a different direction, with a free to play mobile version of Elden Ring reportedly in the works.

Elden Ring first launched in early 2022 and has remained in gaming discussions ever since. It won many GOTY awards and many are looking forward to returning to the game for the upcoming expansion. Aside from new main game content, an Elden Ring mobile version is reportedly in development, according to Reuters.

According to the report, a small team is currently working on the mobile version and progress is said to have been ‘slow', so it could be a long time before we see this. It is also claimed that Tencent is behind this version of the game and is looking to make it a free to play experience with microtransactions. This essentially flies in the face of what fans have come to respect From Software for. All of the Souls games are praised for being complete, highly replayable experiences. A free to play version with microtransactions has the potential to be very iffy.

We'll have to wait and see where this goes but it is worth noting that Tencent has also abandoned plenty of projects and given that progress on this idea is going slow, it could end up being cancelled before it ever becomes an official thing. However, I think it is also worth noting that perhaps Reuters doesn't have the expertise to frame this properly, as a mobile version of Elden Ring is very different from a new game set in the Elden Ring universe with different characters, story and gameplay.

KitGuru Says: This would have to be a spin-off rather than an attempt to recreate the game for low-power devices, with microtransactions forced in. That is perhaps the only way this could feasibly work but I still don't think it is the best idea. Then again, it might stand a better chance in certain markets.
