The Witcher 3’s advanced modding tools arrive this month

While CD Projekt Red said it had ‘no plans' for advanced modding tools for The Witcher 3 back in 2015, the times have changed. The studio announced plans to launch a proper editor for the game, allowing much more comprehensive user-generated content. Now, the RED Kit is officially becoming available.

The RED Kit is a set of new tools that allow creators to form their own questlines, or make edit existing content in The Witcher 3. This means Skyrim-style expansion and quest mods will finally be possible for The Witcher 3, assuming modders are up to the challenge of creating such content. Assuming mod makers do support the game, this will allow The Witcher 3 to live on for years to come.

The new mod editor will only be available on PC and there don't seem to be any plans to support mods in The Witcher 3 on any of the console versions. The RED Kit has been available on Steam in beta form for a few weeks now. After testing, CD Projekt Red has now announced that the software will become available to all, for free, starting on the 21st of May.

Unfortunately, while the RED Kit will get you up to speed with CD Projekt Red's proprietary engine, future games from the Studio will be using completely different tech, with games like The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 being built with Unreal Engine.

KitGuru Says: A more comprehensive set of modding tools can only be a good thing. Hopefully this will inject some new life into The Witcher 3, which will make the long wait for the next game a little easier.
