The PS5 has surpassed 40 million sales

The PS5 has reached a new sales milestone, with Sony confirming that over 40 million units of the new-gen console have been sold. It didn't reach this milestone as quickly as the PS4, but that can primarily be chalked up to significant supply issues during the console's first two years on the market.

While at one point it was almost impossible to get your hands on a PS5 at retail price, nowadays, if you really want to pick one up, getting one at a fair price is not difficult and the system is regularly in stock at retailers. We are expecting to see a sales boost this year too, as Sony is reportedly planning a limited-time price cut of roughly £75, which will surely boost sales in time for Insomniac's next major game, Spider-Man 2, which is due to arrive in October.

The PlayStation 5's milestone follows a recent bout of strong sales in Europe. In June, PS5 sales in the continent had increased by 116 percent compared to June 2022, as reported by GI.biz. Sony hit 30 million PS5 sales in January this year, so there have been an additional 10 million sales since then.

The PS5 has had a strong exclusives line-up during its first three years in the market. In 2021, we saw games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Returnal, followed up by Horizon: Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnarok in 2022. This year, PS5 owners have had Final Fantasy 16 and Spider-Man 2 to look forward to.

KitGuru Says: If Sony can keep up its current momentum, with a couple of major exclusives each year, then the PS5 will continue to climb rapidly in sales charts.
