Just as predicted, Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 this week. Much like the original Switch reveal back in late 2016, Nintendo opted to drop the trailer without any build-up, but there is still a lot left to be revealed about Nintendo's next-gen system.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is the official name for Nintendo's new console, which makes it immediately clear that Nintendo has entered a new generation of hardware and games.
The trailer confirms many of the rumours we've been hearing about the Switch 2 in recent months. The console design has been tweaked to incorporate a bigger screen and slightly bigger Joy-Con controllers. The kickstand on the back now offers far more adjustability compared to the original system, the Joy-Cons now attach magnetically, and the dock has been redesigned too.
Unfortunately, the trailer does not give us technical specs, and the only game shown is Mario Kart. However, Nintendo did confirm that the Switch 2 will be compatible with physical and digital games made for the original console, and the Switch Online service will continue on the new console too, so transitioning from the old console to a new Switch 2 should be an easy and painless experience. As you would expect, new games developed for the Switch 2 won't run on the original Switch console.
A Nintendo Direct is scheduled in for the 4th of February, during which we'll learn more about the Switch 2 and its planned launch line-up of games.
