The mystery behind Nier: Automata’s hidden church has been solved

Fans of the Nier series have been on quite the rollercoaster recently, as the community has scrambled to figure out the mystery behind a secret door leading to a completely new area of the map that had seemingly gone undiscovered since the launch of Nier: Automata. Today, we finally got some answers, clearing up the mystery and squashing some of the wilder theories that emerged in recent days.

Recently, a Reddit user posted a video, claiming to have found a secret area in Nier: Automata. The video, which the poster claimed was recorded on an unpatched PS4 version of Nier: Automata, showed a secret door opening on the map, leading to a hallway, and eventually, the player reaches a hidden church deep underneath the main map.

Additional videos were posted in recent days, giving us a look at a cutscene, imported assets from other Nier games and more. Experienced modders quickly discovered that no such area exists on the map in the game. This led some to theorise that perhaps the developers were behind this, as they should have been the only ones with access to tools to create completely new game areas and add new content at this level.

As it turns out, the Reddit user ‘sadfutago‘ was working with a small group of dedicated modders who have created tools that pave the way for more ambitious Nier: Automata mods. The video was a demonstration of what can be done with these tools, paving the way for other developers to create more substantial mods to the game. The tools will all be made available and will be open source, as revealed by one of the developers during a livestream.

This didn't end up being an elaborate tease from Yoko Taro for a new Nier game. However, this news does mean that the community can carry the spirit of Nier and those with the know-how could generate new content to expand on what the base game already offers.
