The Division 2 ‘unlikely’ to get native Xbox Series X/S and PS5 release

To close out last week, Ubisoft held a stream unveiling what's next for The Division franchise. With The Division 2 getting a fifth year of updates, many have wondered if native versions of the game would arrive for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles. However, Ubisoft says such a move is unlikely.

Speaking with MP1st, The Division 2 creative director, Yannick Banchereau, explained that due to the fact that most of the player base is still on Xbox One and PS4, Ubisoft does not want to move the game over to new-gen consoles, as it would come at the expense of support for the previous generation.

“We still have a lot of players that play on all generations and we are not ready to leave them behind and ask them to upgrade”, Yannick says. “Right now we are trying to make sure every time we add something, it still runs smoothly on the old gen as well.”

If you are looking for a next-gen The Division experience, then you will likely be waiting for The Division 3, if a major sequel is ever made. Right now, aside from continued development on The Division 2, Ubisoft is also working on a mobile and free-to-play console/PC spin-offs.

KitGuru Says: The argument seems to be that The Division 2 could not implement new features that take full advantage of new-gen hardware without sacrificing support for previous-gen console users. I think it is more likely that there simply aren't enough active players to justify the investment. The Division 2 likely would have ceased development earlier if Ubisoft didn't need to keep the franchise alive long enough for its new round of free-to-play spin-offs.
