Tencent is reportedly looking to acquire more game studios, particularly in Europe

For years, Tencent has grown its portfolio of gaming investments. The company owns minority stakes in many publishers and studios across the industry, but it doesn't have as many majority stakes, or wholly owned studios. That could change soon, as sources claim Tencent is now planning to be more aggressive in its pursuit of studios.

According to Reuters, Tencent is ‘resetting' its mergers & acquisitions strategy to focus more on buying majority stakes in ‘overseas' studios outside of China. This is according to sources with ‘direct knowledge' of the matter.

Interestingly, Tencent is apparently particularly interested in game studios and IP in Europe. With companies like Microsoft, Embracer Group, Netflix, Sony, Epic Games and more looking to acquire more studios, Tencent will be looking to get in on the sweepstakes.

Tencent's CSO, James Mitchel, said in a recent earnings call that the company will “continue to be very active” in acquiring studios outside of China, which lines up with the new reports of Tencent's strategy shift.
