Teenager arrested in connection with Grand Theft Auto 6 leak

Earlier this year, the group known as ‘LAPSUS$' was found to be responsible for cyber attacks on Microsoft, Nvidia and Samsung. After some investigation, a group of teenagers from the UK were arrested in connection with the attacks. Now, it appears that another UK member of this cyber group has been arrested, this time for the recent attacks on Rockstar Games and Uber.

After network intrusions earlier this month, both Uber and Rockstar Games suffered data leaks. In Rockstar's case, the hack led to pre-release footage of Grand Theft Auto 6 going viral. Uber responded at the time, confirming that it is cooperating with the FBI on an investigation. The LAPSUS$ group was quickly credited with the attack.

This afternoon, the BBC reports that a 17-year old from the UK was arrested in connection with the leaks. It is believed that this individual is connected to the group and was responsible for the GTA 6 leak, but the police have yet to officially confirm details.

Given the links to Lapsus$, it is likely that the Uber and Rockstar attacks were carried out using social engineering tactics to gain login credentials for employee accounts. Once inside, they steal as much data as possible to use in a ransom demand, or to sell on a dark web marketplace.

KitGuru Says: Previously, Microsoft criticised LAPSUS$ for not covering their tracks well after a slew of data thefts and within a week, arrests were made. A similar situation has played out here just a few months later.
