Starfield looks incredible in new 15-minute gameplay reveal

To cap off the Xbox and Bethesda showcase this evening, Todd Howard took to the stage to properly introduce us to Starfield. We got a full 15-minute gameplay demo, giving us a look at new planets, game mechanics, character creation and more.

One thing that immediately stood out to me during the stream was the graphics. Bethesda games typically aren't on the cutting edge of graphical fidelity, but everything is looking fantastic in Starfield so far, although the frame rate during the stream was a little on the choppy side.

Starfield will offer the most freedom of any Bethesda game to date, almost looking like a mix between Fallout/Skyrim and No Man's Sky. You'll get to build your own ship and fly yourself between all planets in the system – there isn't just one system with multiple planets though, there are over 100. Just a handful of these will end up being important to the main story, but it is clear Bethesda has built an absolutely massive universe for players to explore.

We've heard before that Starfield will have upgraded RPG and character creation mechanics, and we saw a lot of that in action during the reveal trailer. Players will have an extensive character sheet to fill out, being able to pick different personality traits and skills, as well as make finely tuned adjustments to how your character looks. The gameplay also shows advanced crafting mechanics, third-person and first-person combat, as well as several key locations we'll be visiting on our journey.

The story takes place in the year 2330, where our main character joins the Constellation to search for rare artifacts across the galaxy.

While Starfield was initially planned for November 2022, the game was recently delayed to 2023. While the stream simply gives Starfield a 2023 release window, Microsoft and Bethesda have previously said that the plan is to launch Starfield in the first half of next year, so we should have it in our hands by E3 2023.

KitGuru Says: The Xbox showcase had its down moments, but Starfield more than made up for that. The game looks incredible and I can't wait to get my hands on it. What did you all think of the Starfield gameplay reveal? Is the game what you expected, or were you surprised?
