Starbreeze unveils next major project – a co-op D&D game

While Starbreeze still has plenty of work left to do on Payday 3, the studio does have its next major project lined up. While the company's previous licensed game for The Walking Dead was ill-fated, the studio is looking to try its hand at a licensed project once again, this time focused on Dungeons & Dragons.

The Starbreeze D&D game is being developed under the codename ‘Project Baxter' and will carry the studio's “signature cornerstones”, including co-op multiplayer and ‘games as service', meaning lengthy post-launch support for the game with content updates.

The game is targeting a 2026 launch, which seems a bit soon given how long game development cycles have gotten over the years. The game will be built using Unreal Engine 5 though, so we can expect it to contain some of the engine's fresh new features to enhance graphics.

There will be a lot of eyes on this game too after the success of Baldur's Gate 3 from Larian Studios, another licensed D&D video game and one of the highest-reviewed games of 2023.

KitGuru Says: It is great to see more D&D video game projects. Hopefully Starbreeze can get something good together over the next few years and avoid the pitfalls it faced with Payday 3's launch, or its previous Walking Dead project.
