For over a decade, BioWare has handled the development of Star Wars: The Old Republic, keeping it up to date with new content and expansions. Earlier this month, EA announced that the game would be moving studios, freeing up resources at BioWare to work on other projects. Some fans were concerned this was a sign that the game wouldn't be around for much longer, but BioWare claims that is not the case.
EA is moving future development of the Old Republic MMO to Broadsword Online Games, a company headed by Rob Denton, a former BioWare VP. Denton had been at BioWare when The Old Republic project began. This studio handles a number of older MMOs, including Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot. A percentage of BioWare's SWTOR team will be moving over to Broadsword as part of the deal.
This does seem like the sort of move you make when planning to put a game on life support before pulling the plug in a year or two. However, BioWare producer, Keith Kanneg, has now confirmed to fans on the forums that the game is not going into “maintenance mode”.
“Is the game heading into maintenance mode? Absolutely not. As I’ve said before, we are working on future plans including more story and modernization initiatives for the game. We’ve upgraded the game to 64-bit, and are working on moving the servers to the cloud, and there are more content and tech updates on the way.”
Kanneg adds that this move will pave the way for “a lot of creative freedom” for the development team. With that in mind, it sounds like SWTOR will indeed continue to get content updates for the foreseeable future.

KitGuru Says: SWTOR is still played by quite a few people to this day and there have been some excellent new campaigns. However, with The Old Republic now entering Star Wars canon, I think many of us are ready to see new games set in this period.
