Star Wars Jedi: Survivor launches in rough shape for PC and console

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was delayed from its planned March release date to late April in an effort to polish up the game ahead of release. Unfortunately, the game has arrived today in pretty rough shape for all platforms.

It would seem that Survivor could have done with a bit more time in development. The game officially became available to all players today following a round of positive reviews from the press earlier this week. A few of these reviews did mention technical issues but pointed out that they did not have access to the day-one patch. The day-one patch likely has helped fix up some of the problems, but glaring issues still remain.

The game has already launched to a ‘Mostly Negative' rating on Steam, an aggregate score from over 1,000 reviews so far both positive and negative. Many players have been quick to point out performance problems, with even high-end RTX 30 and RTX 40 series graphics cards struggling.

This isn't a simple case of a bad PC port, as there are issues on the console side too. I've played roughly three hours of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS5 and the issues were noticeable very early on, which I'll note here without going into spoilers.

During the very first mission, there were sections with AI companions that caused choppy frame rates. On the second planet, when you get to the first open and explorable area, frame rates begin to swiftly tank as well, often into the 30FPS range, which can make combat sections in open areas much more of a chore compared to the combat sections in linear levels or closed-off areas like caves. In these isolated areas, the frame rate generally remains steady.

I've also noticed graphical issues when transitioning from gameplay to cutscenes, and those transitions can be quite jarring as you watch the frame rate swiftly throttle down from 60FPS to 30FPS.

Due to the erratic nature of the game's performance mode on PS5, it makes it tough to recommend. The game's Quality mode generally gives out more consistent results. It is capped at 30FPS, but at least you'll have consistency, which is something the performance mode sorely lacks right now.
