Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director promises darker tone and ray-traced lighting

Over the weekend during Star Wars Celebration, Respawn and EA officially revealed Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the highly anticipated sequel to Fallen Order. The new game is on track to release in 2023, for current-gen consoles and PC. The initial trailer doesn't give away much, but the game's director, Stig Asmussen, teased some additional details during an interview.

Stig Asmussen, director behind Fallen Order and its sequel, spoke with the official Star Wars website about the new game, confirming that it will be set five years after the events of the original game, and the galaxy has only become a harsher place to live for a Jedi on the run.

“The game is all about survival. That’s why it’s called Jedi: Survivor. They are in dark times, and Cal and the crew are doing whatever it takes to stay alive. That might mean that they are making connections with people that, in other times, might be considered unsavoury. Some of that is portrayed in the trailer, and again, I don’t want to give anything away, but there’s definitely a sense of… I don’t want to spoil anything, sorry!”

The interview also reveals that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will support next-gen console features, including real-time ray-tracing. Asmussen says that thanks to the increased power of the Xbox Series X/S and PS5, as well as their ray-tracing capabilities, Respawn has been able to produce visuals “well beyond” anything the studio has achieved before.
