Star Citizen is still in alpha but Squadron 42 is finally heading towards release

It has been quite a while since the developers over at Cloud Imperium Games gave us an update on Squadron 42 but the period of silence finally came to an end over the weekend. At CitizenCon this week, CIG had some surprising news – Squadron 42 is officially feature-complete and is now on the road to release.

There are two major components to Star Citizen, the main online game where players can group up with friends and explore space, and the single-player action game, Squadron 42, set in the same universe. Featuring a star-studded cast and a new sci-fi story, the game is now “feature complete” and entering the final phase of development.

In the video above, we get a look at the game in action. With all of the content and features now in place, the developers are moving on to the polishing phase, squashing bugs and ensuring the game runs smoothly. While this is the final phase of development, that doesn't mean it will be quick.

Hopefully by the time CitizenCon 2024 rolls around, CIG will have another big update for Squadron 42. In the meantime, Star Citizen remains in active development, gaining new content with each alpha update.

KitGuru Says: It sounds look Squadron 42 could be on track for late 2024, but given how much time CIG has taken with its projects so far, 2025 might be a safer bet. Still, the end is in sight for fans who have been waiting for this game.
