Square Enix’s next big PlayStation exclusive is a Splatoon clone

There were a ton of games shown during the PlayStation Showcase last night but there was one common theme throughout the show – a larger emphasis on multiplayer games. One of the brand new titles announced was a new PlayStation exclusive from Square Enix – Foamstars, which is effectively a Splatoon clone.

Nintendo caught us all by surprise with Splatoon years ago, flipping the shooter genre on its head by swapping out realistic guns and bullets for a range of paintball weapons. It was truly unique at the time and turned out to be a lot of fun and a breath of fresh air.

Square Enix's Foamstars takes a similar approach, but rather than running around with paint, players will be fighting with colourful foam. In a 4v4 player arena, players on each team will be tasked with defending territory and ‘foaming up the opposition' to win the match.

Square Enix will be releasing Foamstars on both PS4 and PS5 consoles. There is no mention of a release for other platforms, like PC.

KitGuru Says: I do think there is room in the shooter space for ideas like this, but with the way this was presented, it definitely had a copy-and-paste vibe and I think more could have been done to differentiate it from Splatoon. At the same time, Splatoon has been a successful franchise for Nintendo, so perhaps the play here was to draw those parallels and make them as obvious as possible.
