Sony will reportedly launch new PS5 with detachable disc drive in 2023

In recent months, there have been an increasing number of reports around a new PS5 revision, one that would replace the current disc and digital versions of the console with a single, redesigned PS5 console with a detachable disc drive. In the latest update to this story, it has been claimed that this new version of the console will arrive in September 2023.

Back in September, Insider Gaming reported that Sony was planning a new PS5 revision with a detachable disc drive, which would “completely replace” the disc and digital PS5 consoles that launched in 2020. Instead of selling separate disc and digital versions of the console, Sony will be able to build just one PS5 chassis, and then users can opt to pick up the bundle with the disc drive, or they can save money on their initial purchase and pick up the disc drive at a later date. In November, The Leak corroborated this report, claiming that the new PS5 will arrive in 2023, and while it will be a slimmer model, Sony apparently has no plans to officially call it the ‘PS5 Slim'.

Now, in an update from Insider Gaming, it is revealed that Sony is aiming for a September 2023 launch. It is also claimed that the detachable disc drive will hook up to an extra USB-C port that Sony is putting on the back of the console.

This new version of the PS5 would replace Sony's two-pronged approach with the PS5 Disc and Digital versions. Instead of manufacturing two SKUs, Sony will be able to just create one, and then source the disc drives separately. Apparently, Sony will stop producing the current disc and digital consoles at the end of 2023.

Sony has not yet made any official announcements regarding this, but if these reports are accurate, we'll get the first official news next year.

KitGuru Says: We're still not sure how this will look, or how many console gamers will want to switch to a portable disc drive solution. Still, if this helps to increase availability for the PS5, it should be a welcome change, especially with huge exclusives like Final Fantasy 16 and Spider-Man 2 on the way.
