Sony plans to be more ‘aggressive’ with multiplatform game releases

During Sony's recent earnings report, the company confirmed that it has dropped its forecast for PS5 sales in 2024 and confirmed that no ‘major franchise' exclusives will be launching this year. To make up for this, Sony is turning its attention to PC, looking to be more aggressive with its multiplatform releases.

Sony first began bringing some of its console exclusives to PC a few years ago, with the goal of giving PC gamers a taste of what they are missing out on by not owning a PlayStation. However, many PC gamers are patient and more than willing to wait a year or so for a game to land on their platform of choice. Now, Sony is looking at the PC market a bit differently and wants to be “aggressive” in bringing more of its first-party games to the platform at a quicker pace.

During the Q&A session at the financial briefing, Sony President, Hiroki Totoki, explained: “In the past, as you all know, we wanted to popularise consoles, and a first-party title's main purpose was to make the console popular. But there is a synergy to it. If we have strong first-party content, not only with our console, but also other platforms like computers, the first-party can be grown with multi-platform, and that can help operating profit to improve. So that's another one we want to proactively work on… we'd like to go aggressive on improving our margin performance.”

Sony has been one of the loudest voices when it comes to the rising cost of video game development, which led to the company ushering in the age of $70 video games with the PS5's launch. We're unlikely to get major releases to go back down in price, but by adding additional platforms, like PC, to the mix, Sony can improve its sales considerably and hopefully, that will stop game prices from increasing further when the next console generation arrives.

KitGuru Says: Helldivers 2 was a PS5 console exclusive, but also launched simultaneously on PC to great success. Hopefully this can serve as a turning point for Sony, leading to the first simultaneous PC/PS5 launches for first-party PlayStation games.
