Senior Borderlands 3 developers leave Gearbox to work on indie project

With the final two expansions now out and all previous in-game events unlocked for players, it would seem that Gearbox's work on Borderlands 3 is officially done. Now, six creative leads on Borderlands are leaving Gearbox in order to team up and form an independent studio.

According to Axios, all six Gearbox employees had begun working on a new project, currently in pre-production, before deciding to leave the studio and work on an independent game. In a statement, Gearbox CEO, Randy Pitchford, said that all staff members left “on the best of terms”, he also confirmed that the group was involved in pre-production on a new project before departing.

As reported by VGC, the creatives leaving Gearbox include:

  • Christopher Brock – senior producer
  • Keith Schuler – lead mission designer
  • Scott Kester – art director
  • Paul Sage – creative director
  • Chris Strasz – UX / game feel director
  • Kevin Penrod – lead character artist

The Gearbox project that was in pre-production is separate from Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, a Borderlands spin-off game with high-fantasy elements. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It is always interesting to see well-known developers teaming up to form independent studios. It will be interesting to see what this group does in the years to come.
