In one of the weirder acquisitions we've seen, SEGA has reportedly negotiated a deal to acquire Rovio Entertainment for roughly $1 billion USD. Rovio Entertainment is a mobile-focused developer, best known for Angry Birds. 

According to The Wall Street Journal, SEGA is close to completing the deal and it could be finalised as soon as next week. Apparently, there have been other offers for Rovio Entertainment in the past at around $800 million, so perhaps there has been a bit of a bidding war going on here.

SEGA doesn't have a huge presence in the mobile market but the publisher seems to be looking to improve that. In the wake of Microsoft's potential acquisition of King, along with the rest of Activision Blizzard, there has been some increased investment in the mobile market. Nintendo recently announced a new joint venture with its mobile partner, DeNA, and Sony has been hiring for its own mobile games team and is also looking into acquisitions.

SEGA and Rovio have not confirmed these talks and due to the sensitive and closed-room nature of M&A negotiations, leaks like this should usually be taken with a grain of salt.

KitGuru Says: We don't yet know if this leak is legitimate, but this would be a pretty good get for SEGA. We may not see Angry Birds in headlines very often, but those games do still bring in millions of daily players.
