SEGA and Paramount greenlight Sonic 4 following high praise for Sonic 3

SEGA and Paramount Pictures had a disaster on their hands when the first Sonic movie was revealed. The original design for the character was ugly beyond belief but after backlash, Paramount spent the extra money to re-do all of Sonic's scenes and since then, fans have been hugely supportive of the film series. Immediately following the positive reception to Sonic 3, which hits cinemas this week, Paramount has now announced that Sonic 4 is on the way.

In the original film, Sonic the Hedgehog, we get introduced to Sonic himself, as well as Dr. Robotnik, played excellently by Jim Carrey. In the second film, Tails and Knuckles join the adventure and now in the third film, we get to see fan-favourite anti-hero, Shadow, enter the fray.

As reported by Variety, Paramount has now put Sonic the Hedgehog 4 on its release calendar, targeting a 2027 release. This announcement comes after Sonic 3 opened up to an 88% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and an even higher 98% score from fans who have seen the movie and submitted ratings.

Given the positive reception, it seems that Sonic 3 will be another hit. Without spoiling anything, Sonic 3 does also have an end credits scene, which teases more new characters joining the film cast.

KitGuru Says: The Sonic movies have been surprisingly great and from the sounds of it, Paramount is going to keep that momentum up. Personally, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a storyline involving Chaos in a future movie. Who would you like to see appear in the next Sonic film?
