Rockstar publicly addresses ‘network intrusion’ and GTA 6 leak

The games industry was shocked over the weekend when 90 videos showcasing legitimate Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay leaked onto the web. Now, Rockstar has managed to assess the situation, confirming a ‘network intrusion'. 

Several hours after the leak began going viral on Sunday, Take-Two's legal team began the process of sweeping social networks and video sharing sites to strike down remnants of the video. The GTA Forum and GTA subreddits are also currently being scrubbed, although since these videos were available in a 3GB direct download, many will likely have offline copies saved.

In response to the situation, Rockstar Games posted a statement yesterday afternoon, confirming that footage of the next Grand Theft Auto leaked, and that data was stolen from its internal systems. Rockstar claims that there will be no disruption to GTA Online, or its long-term projects, like GTA 6. With that said, IT issues have historically led to plenty of game delays, so it is hard to believe that the development of GTA 6 won't be impacted.

Rockstar adds that it is “extremely disappointed” to have details of GTA 6 shared in this way. The company signs off by saying it will properly reveal the game when it is ready.

KitGuru Says: I saw some mixed reactions to the leaked footage. but I was honestly impressed by everything I saw. Games in pre-alpha never look visually great, as the developers are mainly focused on creating a functioning game with working mechanics and systems. The graphical polish comes much later down the line.
