Riot begins staffing up as League of Legends MMO development gets underway

Riot Games has been branching out into different genres recently and has placed a focus on expanding the League of Legends IP with new games and spin-offs. In late 2020, the studio revealed that it was indeed in the early stages of a League of Legends MMO, now, Riot is officially hiring for the project, which is currently known as ‘World of Runeterra'.

Initial confirmation of the game came last year, when Riot VP of IP and Entertainment confirmed that one of the company's unannounced projects was indeed an MMO.

Now, Riot is recruiting to get development rolling. The recruitment website refers to the game as ‘World of Runeterra‘, although this is likely not the final name for the game – that information will be announced at a much later date.

Currently, Riot is looking for UX designers, artists, those with experience in game production and of course, MMO specialists. More jobs will open up as the project moves forward, with Riot saying: “We know MMOs take a lot of people to create, and we’ll need a pretty big raid team if we want to bring Runeterra to life. That's where you come in. We’ll periodically post new roles, but right now we don’t have any specific openings on the team—we’re just gearing up for the journey (and need to replace our greens first).”

There is no indication as to when this MMO will release. The project is currently in early development, so we're unlikely to see it in action for at least a few years.

KitGuru Says: Riot has found success expanding League of Legends into other games over the last few years, but we'll have to wait and see if the company can really shake up the MMO landscape. Do you think a League of Legends based MMO will be successful?
