Report claims Watch Dogs is ‘dead’

While Watch Dogs got off to a rough start initially, the series did garner wider praise with its sequels. We haven't really had any Watch Dogs news since development ended on Watch Dogs Legion, and now it has been claimed that the series is not coming back.

According to Twitter leaker ‘J0nathan‘ (via Insider Gaming), Watch Dogs is “dead and buried” and low sales of Watch Dogs Legion apparently also led to the cancellation of a Battle Royale game based in the Watch Dogs universe. While a hacker-themed battle royale could be interesting, I think it is worth remembering that Watch Dogs Legion came out in 2020, if that game had launched in the last couple of years, there is little guarentee of success due to the monopolisation of the Battle Royale market by much bigger franchises.

This isn't the first time we've heard about a Watch Dogs battle royale game either. The game was reportedly cancelled by early 2023, which I think supports the theory that the cancellation had more to do with difficulties succeeding in the Battle Royale genre, rather than sales of Watch Dogs.

Aside from all of this, it is also rumoured that Ubisoft is involved in a Watch Dogs film. If that is indeed true, it is difficult to believe that we'll never see another Watch Dogs game, especially if the movie turns out well.

KitGuru Says: I don't think the core concept of Watch Dogs Legion landed with a lot of people. It was cool being able to swap to so many different characters, but not having a central lead to follow made it difficult to get into. By contrast, the second game had many key characters and was widely praised for its campaign.
