Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer details new battle system and exploration

This week, Nintendo hosted another Pokémon Presents stream, showcasing a brand new trailer for Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Thanks to the new trailer, we now know much more about this new entry to the Pokémon franchise, including changes to the battle system and new abilities for trainers to utilise.

We already knew the core premise of this game, which is to populate the very first Pokedex during a time where Pokémon are still roaming much of the Hisui region. This leads to huge, open and explorable zones full of Pokémon that have adapted to the region. With that in mind, some classic Pokémon will be looking different, Growlithe for instance has thicker fur to stay warm in the colder environment.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus will feature some changes to the battle system. Combat is still turn based, but there is a new Action Order bar that shows which Pokémon will be attacking next. Players can use this when deciding to use strong or agile attacks, so you'll be constantly weighing the benefits of utilising strength or speed. Faster attacks will put your Pokémon higher in the Action Order bar, while strong attacks will do more damage, but you're likely going to take a hit or two before pulling one off.

The new trailer shows that players will be able to free-fly across areas with the help of a bird Pokémon. There are some stealth mechanics, so trainers can sneak up on wild Pokémon and attempt to capture them without battling.

Currently, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is scheduled to release on Nintendo Switch on the 28th of January 2022.
