PlatinumGames wants to revive Scalebound with Microsoft

While the Xbox team did have a great turnaround towards the end of the last console generation, there were some major errors made along the way, with one of the biggest being the cancellation of Scalebound, an exclusive title developed by PlatinumGames. The IP has been in limbo since then, but it seems that Platinum is up for taking the project up again if Microsoft gets on board.

This week during an interview with IGN Japan, Platinum's president, Atsushi Inaba, made it known that Hideki Kamiya still wants to bring Scalebound to life. Kamiya went on to say “I’d like to appeal to Phil Spencer directly! Let’s do it, Phil!”

Inaba went on to say that Platinum is serious about reviving Scalebound and would like the opportunity to bring the game to life once again:

“Often in an interview you might hear a developer politely saying, ‘Yes, if we had the opportunity we’d love to work on that again’, but we don’t mean it that way. Both Kamiya and I are serious – we really would love to work on Scalebound again. I’d like to discuss it with Microsoft properly.”

This is not the first time that PlatinumGames has spoken up on Scalebound. Previously, Kamiya has explained that errors were made on both sides the first time around, adding that there is no bad blood and that Platinum is open to working with Microsoft again in the future.

Microsoft has not yet responded publicly, but given the company's desire to improve relations with Japanese developers and expand the Game Pass library, it seems feasible that the two companies could arrange a new publishing agreement.

KitGuru Says: Scalebound was one of the main reasons I picked up an Xbox One back in 2015. It was a very disappointing cancellation, but there is hope for the future. Hopefully Phil Spencer takes Platinum up on this and can sort a new publishing deal. Would you like to see Scalebound revived for Xbox Series X/S and PC?
