Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is a new game, not just an expansion

During the Xbox Game Studios showcase earlier this week, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis was announced, featuring a very impressive visual overhaul for the game. At the time, it was assumed that this was an expansion to the current PSO2, but as it turns out, Sega is giving the game the ‘Realm Reborn' treatment.

Similarly to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is a separate game to the original. It is the ‘next generation' of PSO2, built on a new engine with a rebuilt game world, where both old and new content will continue to co-exist.

In terms of new content, Phantasy Star Online 2 players will be tasked with taking down new threats in New Genesis. The new main story is set 1,000 years after the original, featuring a wide open battlefield that Sega likes to call a ‘living world' complete with its own day/night and weather cycles.

In the video above, Sega also highlights other new mechanics, including new ways to move across the world. Old weapons and units etc will carry over, as will already created player characters, so you don't need to leave your current characters behind and start over from scratch.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is coming out some time in 2021. So far, it is confirmed for Xbox and PC.

KitGuru Says: Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is looking and sounding very promising so far. Are any of you planning on checking this one out when it releases?
