Octopath Traveler mysteriously delisted from Nintendo eShop

Octopath Traveler quickly became one of my favourite JRPGs back when it first released in 2018 for the Nintendo Switch. The game remains popular to this day, spawning a mobile spin-off and a full sequel, which released just last year. Now, in an odd turn of events, the original Octopath Traveler has now been delisted from the Nintendo eShop.

While Octopath Traveler is now available across a range of platforms, it began life as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. With that in mind, it seemed odd when the game disappeared from the Switch eShop over the weekend. Fortunately, Nintendo has already confirmed that the game will return to the eShop, so this is just a temporary issue.

So what caused this? While we're used to seeing older digital games delisted due to expiring music licenses, that is not the case here. Gematsu notes that the publishing rights for the Switch version of the game changed hands back in December, moving from Nintendo to Square Enix, This may have led to the temporary removal of the game while the store page is refreshed.

We don't know exactly when Octopath Traveler will return to the Switch eShop but it shouldn't take long. In the meantime, if you're trying to get the game digitally on Switch, retail download codes still work.

KitGuru Says: Octopath Traveler is one of my top Switch games, and it ranks highly for many other Switch RPG fans too. With that in mind, the game's delisting was bound to make some headlines but fortunately, the game will be returning soon.
