Nintendo pulls Super Smash Bros from EVO 2022 tournament

Sony recently made a big bet on esports by jointly acquiring EVO, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world. The event is on track to return in 2022 but unfortunately, there will be one major game missing from the roster this year, as Nintendo has pulled Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. has been a major game at EVO for years, but Nintendo has also been known to make things difficult for tournament organisers in the past. While we don't know the reason behind the game being pulled, the organisers behind EVO have confirmed that there will be no Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament taking place this year.

In a statement, the Evo team said: “While we're thankful for all the amazing games joining us later this year in Las Vegas, we want to let you know in advance that Super Smash Bros. will not be making a return appearance”.

Super Smash Bros. has been present at EVO since 2007. Nintendo has not stated why it has chosen to pull support for the event. It unlikely has anything to do with Sony's investment though, as Super Smash Bros. was present at last year's event, which took place after Sony announced the acquisition.

KitGuru Says: I'm not the biggest esports fan, but EVO is always fun to watch and there is nothing quite like watching the best of the best facing off in Smash Bros. Hopefully Nintendo can be persuaded to re-join Evo in the future.
