Nintendo plans to shutdown online services for Wii U and 3DS in 2024

Earlier this year, Nintendo began winding down services for the 3DS and Wii U systems, starting with the shutdown of each console's digital game store. Now, the remaining online services are set to go in early 2024.

In an announcement published today, Nintendo confirmed that in April 2024,” online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U”. On the 3DS front, this applies to all versions, including the standard 3DS, the New 3DS and the 2DS.

This should mean that online multiplayer games will cease to function on either console, but games with local multiplayer available should still work as usual.

In 2024, Nintendo is expected to debut its new generation console but the company also still has several Switch exclusives planned, so the current console is not on its way out just yet.
