Major PS5 Software update will enable 8TB M.2 SSD storage

Sony has rolled out its latest PS5 Software beta to testers, unveiling new upcoming features and improvements for the console. The headlining feature here is an increase in M.2 SSD storage compatibility. Following this update, you’ll now be able to add an extra 8TB of storage to the PS5 console.

Previously, the PS5 supported secondary M.2 SSDs up to 4TB, which was already a huge upgrade over the console’s included sub-1TB SSD. Out of the box, the PS5 typically offers just under 700GB of storage for games. Now, PCIe 4 SSDs up to 8TB will be usable with the PS5, so if you are the type of person that absolutely hates uninstalling games, then this update is for you.

This update also solidifies one of the PS5’s biggest design leads in this console generation. Sony offers an accessible M.2 SSD slot for users to install their own third-party M.2 SSD to expand system storage. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X/S consoles offer expandable storage through a proprietary memory card slot, meaning there are more restrictions on consumer choice for expanding the Xbox’s storage compared to the PS5.

Aside from the increased storage amount, this new PS5 Software Beta also includes new UI improvements and quality of life changes. Dolby Atmos is now supported on the console, even with games that use Sony’s new 3D Audio tech. You’ll also be able to use Dolby Atmos in streaming apps and Blu-Ray playback.

In terms of QoL features, if you’d like to disable the PS5’s startup beep sound, you can now do so within the settings menu. Users can now also assign a second controller to an account as an assist controller, so you can quickly pick up a gamepad and help someone get through a tough part in a game.

The PS5 beta program is open to anyone with a PS5 console, so you can sign up to receive the updates immediately. However, as this is beta software, there is always the possibility of bugs.

KitGuru Says: The PS5’s M.2 SSD slot is one of its best features. Not many people are going to want to shell out the cash for an 8TB M.2 SSD that meets the speed requirements needed for PS5 game installations, but those that do also probably have the kind of game collection that requires massive storage.
