Insomniac responds to cyberattack and massive data leak

In recent weeks, Insomniac Games was hacked, with a ransomware group stealing over 1TB of data. This week, much of that data has leaked onto the World Wide Web, spanning sensitive business documents, and even a playable alpha build of Marvel's Wolverine. Now, Insomniac has officially responded with a public statement. 

Over on the company's Twitter account, Insomniac thanked fans for the “outpouring of compassion” that followed the massive data leak. The studio went on to say: “We're both saddened and angered about the recent criminal cyberattack on our studio and the emotional toll it's taken on our dev team. We have focused inwardly for the last several days to support each other”.

Insomniac is also aware that the leak included personal information of current and former employees, as well as contractors, alongside early development details on Marvel's Wolverine. They are still working to “determine what data was impacted”, adding that this experience has been “extremely distressing”.

Due to the seriousness of this leak, there was some concern that Marvel's Wolverine might be cancelled. However, Insomniac says “like Logan, Insomniac is resilient” and work on the game will continue. However, as much of the current state of the game is now public knowledge, the studio also adds that “the game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development”, as is the case with most games.

Insomniac will share more information on Wolverine “when the time is right”. The game should release by 2026, so there is still plenty of dev time left and any of the footage currently circulating won't be representative of the final product.

If you come across the leak, I would advise against downloading any of it. Those who have downloaded the stolen Wolverine alpha have already begun getting C&D letters from their ISPs. Beyond that, hackers could have buried anything in the files, so running it is far from advisable from a personal security standpoint. After all, this leak did come from a ransomware group.

KitGuru Says: The personal data leaks should be priority one here. With that said, I would like to mention that anyone pre-judging Wolverine based on current footage circulating should be patient and re-evaluate the game at a later date when it is ready. A prototype alpha is far from a finished game in the AAA landscape and Insomniac was likely not planning to show anything until sometime in 2025. By that time, the game will be vastly different.
