Insomniac confirms Wolverine and Spider-Man games share the same universe

Insomniac's Spider-Man games contain plenty of easter eggs for the wider Marvel universe. Soon, Insomniac will expand its Marvel repertoire with a standalone game based on Wolverine. In a recent interview, Insomniac confirmed that while Wolverine doesn't get a nod in Spider-Man 2, Insomniac's version of the character will be based in the same universe.

Spider-Man 2 does contain nods to plenty of Marvel characters, including the next set of villains on the way in future games, to nods to Avengers like Daredevil and Doctor Strange. While Insomniac's Wolverine game was announced at the same time as Spider-Man 2, the character was not teased at all in Insomniac's latest game.

However, in an interview on Kinda Funny Games covering spoilers for the game, Spider-Man 2 Creative Director, Bryan Intihar, confirmed that both Wolverine and Spider-Man take place in the same universe. It would seem that Insomniac didn't want to put too much pressure on the Wolverine team with hints or easter eggs in Spider-Man 2, instead opting to “let that team cook” and “do their own thing”.

Wolverine and Spider-Man are very different characters and will have very different gameplay. While a more ambitious cross-over could arrive eventually, I think Insomniac will look to keep Wolverine separate as it tests the waters with the first game.

KitGuru Says: Personally, I do want Wolverine to be about Wolverine, with little to do with Insomniac's Spider-Man games. The two could crossover eventually but at first, Insomniac needs to establish a strong version of the character that stands on its own.
