Hideki Kamiya is leaving PlatinumGames

After co-founding the company and going on to direct several hits, Hideki Kamiya is now leaving PlatinumGames. Kamiya announced that he will be departing the studio in October to work on other projects and it sounds like there may have been some drama on the way out.

In an unexpected announcement today, PlatinumGames said “we regret to announce that Hideki Kamiya will be leaving PlatinumGames on October 12th”. The studio went on to thank him for his leadership, creative ideas and contributions to the studio since its founding roughly 15 years ago.

In his own set of announcement tweets, Kamiya added to his departure announcement, stating that the decision came “after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs”. He added that this outcome is “for the best” and that he will “continue to create in my Hideki Kamiya way”.

Based on the wording, it sounds like perhaps there were creative differences, with Kamiya wanting to continue making certain kinds of games, while others at Platinum want to branch out into new territory, like live service or multiplayer to shore up revenue.

Hideki Kamiya is well known in the games industry, having spearheaded franchises like Devil May Cry during his Capcom games, and Bayonetta at Platinum, amongst other projects. With this announcement, it will be interesting to see what happens with Project GG, which was set to be Kamiya's next big title at Platinum.

KitGuru Says: Hideki Kamiya will continue to make games from the sounds of it, but it will no longer be happening at Platinum. We'll have to wait and see how this impacts the company's future plans and where Kamiya ends up next.
