Hangar 13 faces layoffs as work on new Mafia game begins

Just a few weeks ago, we learned that Hangar 13 is working on a new Mafia game, using Unreal Engine 5. The studio also reportedly has plans for a full trilogy of new titles. Unfortunately, in the meantime, Hangar 13 will be downsizing, leading to layoffs.

As reported by Kotaku, Hangar 13 staff were told last week that layoffs would be taking place. The exact number of staff members affected is unknown, but the news isn't too surprising, as Hangar 13 recently had a project cancelled.

Hangar 13 is currently going through a transition period and while the team is downsizing now, it will need to scale up again eventually once new games enter production. The studio is already in the early stages of working on a new Mafia game, and Hangar 13 leadership will attempt to get the sequel greenlit before production ends on Mafia 4.

Aside from new Mafia titles, Hangar 13 is also said to be working on a new Top Spin game, a return to the classic Tennis video game series.

KitGuru Says: Game studios tend to cycle through developers pretty quickly, particularly after project cancellations, or after a major project is completed. Studios get lean for pre-production, and then scale up for full production. Still, it is always a shame to see people losing jobs and hopefully all of those affected land on their feet at other studios.
