Halo Infinite scraps local co-op, delays Season 3 to March

Halo Infinite's first year has been rough to say the least. Content droughts, progression system issues and delayed features have really soured the overall opinion of the game and unfortunately, 343 still hasn't managed to get on top of it.

This week, 343 revealed its new Infinite roadmap, which pushes ‘Season 3' all the way to March 2023. Instead, this holiday season will bring a ‘Winter Update', which will have a free battle pass and run for a lengthy 5-month period. This update will include a ‘Match XP beta', indicating that 343 is finally revisiting multiplayer progression to address complaints made back at launch.

The update will also include two events, a new game mode and two new maps. The most important part of this update, which drops on November 8th, is the addition of Campaign co-op and mission re-play, as well as the Forge mode beta. While campaign co-op has been delayed once again, at least now it will launch alongside mission replay, which wasn't a confirmed feature previously.

The arrival of Forge mode should also help ease some of this coming content drought. If you've been following the Forge updates while the tool has been in testing, you'll know that it offers the most impressive toolset of any Halo game to date. Now we just have to hope there is enough of a community left around this game to make custom content for.

The delayed ‘Season 3' will now begin on the 7th of March and will end on June 27th, the shortest Infinite season to date. This coincides with an important note – local and split-screen co-op modes have now been cancelled and all of those resources have been reassigned to ‘live service' development. The cancellation is a bad look for a game that has struggled so much since launch, but it does mean the game will get swifter content updates from Season 3 onwards.
