Grand Theft Auto 5 no longer supports Steam Deck due to new anti-cheat

As one of the most popular games on Steam, Valve was sure to get Grand Theft Auto V working on Steam Deck back in the early days of the system. Unfortunately, due to a recent game update that introduced anti-cheat, the game is now officially ‘unsupported' on the Deck. 

After nine years of allowing cheaters to fester GTA Online servers, Rockstar Games finally added anti-cheat this month, utilising the BattleEye service. Due to this, playing GTA Online from a Steam Deck could result in a game ban, due to the use of the Proton compatibility layer to get the game running on Linux.

Valve has updated the Steam Store page for the game now, removing the Steam Deck ‘Verified' badge. As the game was consistently ranked in the top ten ‘most played' games on the Deck, this has ended up being quite a shock and Valve has even refunded at least a few gamers over the change, despite having high numbers of hours played.

While this move means that it is no longer safe to play GTA Online from a Steam Deck, you should still be able to play the single-player portion of the game on the Deck, despite it now being listed as an unsupported game.
