From Software is looking to self-publish future games

We received huge gaming news earlier this week, after Kadokawa Corp. announced that it has sold off stakes in From Software to Sony Interactive Entertainment and Tencent. Previously, From Software has worked with multiple publishers, but moving forward, the company may begin self-publishing its games.

Sony and Tencent have each taken a stake in From Software, with Sony Interactive Entertainment acquiring 14.09 percent of the company, and Tencent taking a 16.25 percent stake. Combined, the pair invested around $250 million USD in the studio.

As spotted by PCGamer, there was a note in the press release about how From Software plans to use the money. Aside from exploring ways to branch out into multimedia, and developing new games, From Software also wants to expand “the scope of its own publishing in the significantly growing global market”.

Previously, Bandai Namco had published the Dark Souls games, as well as FromSoft's most recent mega hit, Elden Ring. This new move towards self-publishing for From Software likely prompted Bandai Namco's comments in August, in which the company warned investors that recent mergers and acquisitions are making it harder for smaller publishers to gain access to the best studios.

KitGuru Says: From Software is now one of the most well known studios around and each release draws a lot of attention in and out of Japan. With that in mind, the studio certainly has the chops to self-publish. Perhaps that new Armored Core game will be their first self-published game.
