Forspoken devs reportedly had ideas for a sequel before Luminous shutdown

Luminous Productions won't be around for much longer, with Square Enix announcing plans to dissolve the studio and reassign employees to other projects within the company. As it turns out, the studio had multiple projects in the works before this news came down, including a potential Forspoken sequel.

Forspoken launched earlier this year to mixed critical acclaim and while the game did garner some hardcore fans, this didn't translate into the sales numbers Square Enix was hoping for. At this point, the studio behind the game, Luminous Productions, is being dissolved, with employees set to be reassigned to other projects. Before all of this happened though, the studio had plans and ideas for future games.

As reported by RPGSite owner, Alex Donaldson, Luminous was in the ‘preliminary stages' of development on other projects and had outlines for a potential sequel for Forspoken. However, with the studio being dissolved, it is likely that these projects won't see the light of day and Forspoken will likely not see future content, outside of one planned DLC due to release this Summer.

The Luminous Engine, which powered Forspoken and was set to be the platform for a number of games targeting new-gen consoles like the PS5, will also likely be dropped in favour of different systems Square Enix has in place, or in favour of more widely used third-party engines, like Unreal Engine.

KitGuru Says: While future Luminous projects will now be cancelled, that doesn't necessarily mean that some of the ideas won't be repurposed for different games somewhere down the line.
