Former Hearthstone director unveils new Marvel-themed card game

Back in 2018, Ben Brode officially left Blizzard and Hearthstone behind to start up a new studio. Less than a year later, Brode confirmed that his new studio was working on a Marvel game and last night, the new project was officially revealed.

Marvel Snap is a new Marvel-themed card game created by Second Dinner, a studio formed by veteran developers, many of which were part of the Hearthstone team during the game's golden years.

While Marvel Snap is being developed by former Hearthstone developers, don't expect a Hearthstone clone. With this game, the development team opted to cut down on all the time-consuming parts of card games. Rather than a 30 to 40 card deck, Marvel Snap cuts things way back to a 15-card deck, and rather than taking individual turns, both players can set down cards at the same time.

If you are close to winning a match, you'll be able to ‘Snap' your opponent, which is essentially a double-down button. If you snap and win, you'll get double the rewards, if you lose, you'll miss out. The video above does a good job of explaining the game, and it is great to see Brode's enthusiasm on display once again.

Marvel Snap will be launching later this year for PC, Android and iOS. A closed beta for Android devices is happening soon and there are 150 cards planned for launch. According to the developers, one of the team's main goals has been to ensure players can unlock every card in the game without paying anything.

KitGuru Says: I am a huge fan of card games, so I'm looking forward to this. It sounds very different from Hearthstone, but as with any card game, it is difficult to judge without playing it. What do you all think of Marvel Snap so far?
