Former Bayonetta VA calls on fans to boycott new game

We're coming up towards the long-awaited launch of Bayonetta 3, but the game has run into some unexpected controversy at the final hurdle. Recently, former Bayonetta VA, Hellena Taylor, called on fans to boycott the game due to a lowball offer for her to return for the third game. This eventually led to Hideki Kamiya deactivating his Twitter account. Additionally, fellow voice actor, Jennifer Hale, has now also weighed in on the situation.

Hellena Taylor voiced Bayonetta in both the first and second games in the series, but Taylor has not returned for the third game, which is due to release on Nintendo Switch on the 28th of October. In a series of videos on Twitter, Taylor claimed that PlatinumGames made a very low offer for her to return for the third game. The rate offered was apparently $4000, but with the franchise having made $450 million, it does seem that playing the lead role should be worth a bit more.

Previously, PlatinumGames had claimed that Taylor was unable to reprise the role due to scheduling conflicts, something that the actor has now denied. PlatinumGames exec and Bayonetta creator, Hideki Kamiya, denied that a ‘lowball' offer was made to Taylor, before deactivating his Twitter account.

Now, Taylor's replacement, Jennifer Hale, has issued a statement of her own on the situation. Due to being under NDA, she is unable to say much, but Hale does say that she advocates for voice actors, while adding that she hopes fans keep in mind that there is an entire team behind Bayonetta 3, not just a few suits who may have made some bad decisions. Hale also hopes that all parties involved can “resolve their differences in an amicable and respectful way”.

Bayonetta 3 is set to be one of the Nintendo Switch's big holiday-season exclusives this year. The game is due to launch on the 28th of October, almost five years after the project was first announced.

KitGuru Says: PlatinumGames isn't having the best year. First, Babylon's Fall failed to gain traction and was ultimately scrapped. Now, we have a lot of drama surrounding the release of Bayonetta 3 – something that Nintendo is no doubt annoyed with. Do you think this situation will hurt sales of Bayonetta 3?
