Final Fantasy 14 is heading to mobile

Earlier this Summer, we heard whispers that Square Enix was cooking up a new mobile version of its popular MMO, Final Fantasy 14. Now, the developers are finally ready to lift the curtain on their ambitious mobile game.

Several MMOs have successfully made the transition to mobile in recent years, with Black Desert Online being one of the biggest examples. The mobile version of Final Fantasy 14 is being developed by Lightspeed Studios, a subsidiary of Tencent. This same subsidiary recently set up a studio in Japan, headed former Capcom executive and Devil May Cry / Dragon's Dogma director, Hideaki Itsuno.

The mobile version of Final Fantasy 14 will endeavour to “faithfully recreate the story, duties and battle content”, alongside other aspects of the game. To start off with though, the game will launch with nine of the ‘Jobs' available in the main game on PC and consoles. It sounds like the mobile version will be playing catch-up to the expansion content available on other versions of the game. Given that this version of the game will target an entirely different market of gamers, that decision sounds sensible to keep the scope of the project in check, and it gives mobile gamers plenty to look forward to in future updates.

Right now, we have no idea how Final Fantasy 14 Mobile will be monetised. The main game on PC and consoles requires a monthly subscription. However, with most mobile titles being free-to-play with various forms of microtransactions, there will need to be a whole new strategy in place for this version of Final Fantasy 14.
