Far Cry 7 will bring notable improvements to gameplay

Ubisoft has been trying to figure out what to do with the Far Cry series for a while now. With Far Cry 7 on the horizon, Ubisoft looks to finally be switching up its open world formula. Better yet, the next Far Cry game will also have a technical upgrade, as the developers are reportedly moving away from the Dunia engine to Ubisoft's Snowdrop engine.

According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft has two Far Cry projects in development right now. One is Far Cry 7, developed under the codename “Blackbird” and the other is a multiplayer spin-off shooter set in the Far Cry universe, codenamed “Maverick”. Both titles are said to be in development at Ubisoft Montreal, and while they were originally planned for a 2025 release, the games have apparently slipped to 2026.

Far Cry will play more like a fast-paced shooter in newer iterations, as Ubisoft is said to have overhauled movement completely, adding features like vaulting and tactical sprint, hallmarks of the modern FPS experience. This additional speed will come in handy, as Far Cry 7 is said to feature an in-game time limit for the campaign, giving players 72 in-game hours to complete their rescue mission, or see their family killed by a group of conspiracy cultists.

While internal feelings around Far Cry 7 are positive, according to Insider Gaming, the extraction shooter spin-off, Project Maverick, has an uncertain outlook, as the project was greenlit to chase trends. Given that Ubisoft recently failed with similar multiplayer games in The Division franchise, as well as the shutdown of XDefiant, Ubisoft's priorities could see a notable shift next year.

KitGuru Says: I've always liked the Far Cry games but Far Cry 6 was a bit of a miss for me, especially after Far Cry 5. From the sounds of it, Far Cry 7 will be a big improvement.
