Fallout: New Vegas was not ‘retconned’ in TV series

While most have enjoyed the Fallout TV series, there has been a group of fans on social media that disagree with some of the story decisions made for the show. Due to locations mentioned in Fallout: New Vegas appearing in the show, many fans thought that the game was being ‘retconned', or removed from canon. This also led to a rise in conspiracy theories, claiming that Bethesda simply hates New Vegas because another studio made it. Now, Todd Howard has spoken out on this.

If you have not yet seen the Fallout series, then do be warned that this article will contain some spoilers.

A prominent location in the Fallout TV series is Shady Sands, the claimed capital city for the New California Republic, one of the many prominent factions in the Fallout universe. In the show, the city is shown in a destroyed state, having been bombed in an act of jealousy.

Shady Sands also appears prominently in Fallout: New Vegas, but according to the canon timeline, the show would have the city being bombed before the events of New Vegas, essentially ignoring events from the game. As New Vegas is one of the most beloved games in the series, some fans were very unhappy with this.

However, speaking with IGN, Todd Howard has confirmed that no, New Vegas has not been ‘retconned' or removed from canon. Without giving away too much, Howard says that “the bomb falls just after the events of New Vegas, that's when Shady Sands blows”.

KitGuru Says: Chances are, there will be a bit of dialogue included to really set the timeline straight so New Vegas fans can rest easy knowing their favourite game in the series does attribute to the overall canon.
