Fallout 4’s big patch lands today

After a number of delays, Bethesda is finally rolling out the next-gen update for Fallout 4 today on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles. PC players are also getting an update today, including some new Creation Club content, as well as bug fixes and new features like support for ultrawide monitors.

Bethesda has been working on a next-gen update for Fallout 4 on consoles for over a year now. It was originally supposed to drop in late 2023, but it had to be pushed to 2024. Then, Bethesda chose to take some extra time with it in order to capitalise on the release of the Fallout TV series this month, which has gone on to cause huge spikes in player numbers for all the Fallout games.

The new patch for Fallout 4 begins rolling out at 5PM BST today. On the PC side, Bethesda says it has taken care to not break everyone's mods, but given how many mods exist and the many ways they can conflict with game files, we wouldn't expect a completely smooth transition for those with mods installed.

On Xbox Series X/S and PS5, Fallout 4 will now run at a native 60FPS, and a higher resolution mode is also available for those who prefer to crank up graphical settings. The Creation Club will be updated with free items for players to download as well, including new weapons and Power Armour sets, as well as Halloween decorations, which doesn't make a ton of sense in April, but given that this patch was initially planned for October 2023, this inclusion isn't out of place.

On the PC side, players can expect some long-standing bug fixes, and the Creation Kit, the tool used to produce mods for Fallout 4, is getting some fixes as well. The biggest addition here is official ultrawide support, removing the need for mods or third-party software like Flawless Widescreen. Today's update also makes Fallout 4 ‘Steam Deck Verified', which won't mean much to those who had already been playing the game on the Deck, but it is good marketing for new Steam Deck owners who are perhaps now interested in playing Fallout after seeing the show.
