EA is splitting into two companies – EA Entertainment and EA Sports

EA is making some big changes internally. This week, the publisher announced a restructuring that will see EA splitting into two separate companies – EA Entertainment and EA Sports.

EA Sports has long acted as a separate publisher within Electronic Arts, with different teams that handle sports licensing, and relationships with leagues and athletes, as well as separate development teams that only work on Sports titles like FIFA. With the new restructuring in place, EA Sports, the line between EA and its Sports division will become clearer.

EA Entertainment will be led by Laura Miele acting as President. Meanwhile, Respawn co-founder, Vince Zampella, will continue to oversee a number of studios at EA Entertainment.

EA Sports will be led by Cam Webber, overseeing all sports and racing games. EA CEO, Andrew Wilson, will remain in place overseeing the entire operation. According to Wilson, this restructuring will “empower studio leaders with more creative ownership and financial accountability to make faster and more insightful decisions around development and go-to-market strategies”.

That last sentence is encouraging. EA has faced backlash over the years for cancelling single-player projects and creating an environment where many teams felt like they had to shift to multiplayer in some form. In more recent years, EA has eased its stance on single-player games and has published several fantastic story-driven games, including Respawn's Star Wars Jedi titles, Star Wars Squadrons and Dead Space.
