Blizzard working on updating Legendary Crests in Diablo Immortal

Diablo Immortal is a tricky game to talk about. It offers a lot of freely playable content and succeeds in delivering a quality Diablo experience on the go. However, it is also laden with microtransactions, the worst of which are the game's legendary crests, which are the only way to get the highest tier upgrades in the game. Now a few months after launch, Blizzard is looking to redesign the legendary crests, but not in the way you are hoping for.

Despite controversy around the legendary crests system and the high cost of creating a ‘maxed out' build, Diablo Immortal has gone on to generate over $100 million so far, and has also been downloaded by tens of millions of players. One of the issues with Legendary Crests is that there are two versions, a standard version and an ‘eternal' version, both of which look very similar in-game. With that in mind, some players were buying in-game item bundles thinking they were getting the eternal crests, which grant you a roll for a wider range of loot at the end of a challenge rift.

To get around this, Blizzard is now redesigning the legendary crest icons, so each has a more unique shape and colour, which should help players differentiate between them easier and avoid spending money on items they don't actually want.

Wyatt Cheng, the game director behind Immortal and the man responsible for the ‘do you guys not have phones?' meme, confirmed on Reddit (via pcgn) that the icons are being changed to provide greater transparency to the player. Unfortunately, this redesign does not include expanded options for free players to earn these crests and save them up, nor does it include a rebalance of the loot drop system to make things fairer for the average player.

KitGuru Says: I initially got excited when I saw headlines proclaiming that Immortal's Legendary Crests are being ‘redesigned', but unfortunately I did not find the good news I was hoping for. Yes, the icons are being redesigned, but the actual underlying system that has been highly criticised is not changing.
